Ensign A.K. “Bert” Earnest came from
a military family in Richmond, Virginia. After graduation from the
Virginia Military Institute, he won his wings at Pensacola, he went
on to become one of the most highly decorated heroes of the Second
World War. At Midway, he was awarded two navy Crosses by Admiral
Chester Nimitz, who called his mission on June 4, 1942, “one
of the epics of combat aviation.” At Guadalcanal, he was personally
cited by the overall military commander, Marine General A.A. Vandergrift
for his critical role in helping to win the campaign.
