Ensign Victor Alan Lewis was in love with Anna McGrory,
a Catholic girl from Randolph, Massachusetts, whose parents wouldn’t
let them marry because he was an Episcopalian. As a boy, he hated
to take risks, and was known locally for swimming around the edge
of a neighborhood pond instead of straight across it like the other
boys. He was one of the first six pilots to attack the entire Japanese
fleet.
